Confirmation

Confirmation

“The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.  For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1285)

Confirmation is the second sacrament of Christian initiation.  It is called Confirmation because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace.  Through this sacrament, the grace given in baptism is deepened.

Confirmation for youth is received during the fall of 9th Grade.  In order to be confirmed, an individual must participate in the program that is offered through the Religious Education Program.  Confirmation preparation is a two-year course.  Level 1 is covered in Grade 7 continuing with Level 2 in Grade 8.

The Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated by Bishop Robert J. Coyle at St. Joseph's Church on October 18, 2022.   We congratulate our confirmandi and their families.

The Requirements of a sponsor

The role of a sponsor is an important one for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.  The Church sees the sponsor as a full-initiated Catholic who supports the one receiving the sacrament with example and instruction. The sponsor must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.  For further information, click on the Sacraments tab and choose Confirmation from the dropdown menu.  There is a subpage "Sponsor Information".
